Madeleine Winnett

Crafter, Traveller, Tea-drinker.

Author: Madeleine Winnett

I was an Australian Rotary Youth Exchange student and lived in Germany for 12 months during 2014/2015. I am currently an undergraduate University student studying a double degree in International Security Studies and Languages. I am undertaking a University exchange in Germany during 2018. I have an ongoing fascination with languages and dream daily of globetrotting and speaking multiple languages. I have a keen interest in photography and look forward to learning the art through experimentation, while documenting my time abroad. I was first taught to sew by my Grandmother, and haven't stopped making my own clothes since!

Two Thousand and Eighteen

2018 was a big year filled with new friends and new experiences. I spent roughly 4 months from this year in Australia, and the other 8 months were spent travelling abroad. At the end of January, I left Australia to fulfil my long term goal of going on a university exchange. Ever since returning from… Read More Two Thousand and Eighteen

A Day in Strasbourg

The international office at the University of Konstanz has offered a variety of excursions to various nearby cities throughout the semester. During our March orientation program we had the opportunity to catch the ferry to Meersburg, as well as to travel to Freiburg and the island of Reichenau. Past excursions which I have been on… Read More A Day in Strasbourg

Japan in Photos

My time so far in Japan has been an incredible experience. Japan is such a beautiful country and there is so much to explore that I’m afraid I won’t have time to see it all. I am however grateful that the program I’m participating in has introduced me to many aspects of Japanese culture that… Read More Japan in Photos

Two Thousand and Sixteen

2016 has a been a year of firsts. My first year out of high school has drawn to a close, and I have successfully completed my first year of university. I acquired my first weekend job and returned to Germany for the first time post my exchange in 2014. I kicked off my year by attending the… Read More Two Thousand and Sixteen

Leaving Home to Return Home

While at university, I am fortunate enough to receive a 4 week semester break throughout June and July. This year, I decided to travel back to Flensburg to visit my school friends and host families whom I met while I was a Rotary Youth Exchange student in 2014. Ever since arriving back in Australia, returning… Read More Leaving Home to Return Home

Two Thousand and Fifteen

Two thousand and fifteen was a year of adjustment. Upon returning from my 12 month exchange, I was disorientated and unsure as to how the year would pan out. As I reflect on the past year, I’m pleasantly surprised by all that has occurred. It was a roller coaster which I had never been on before. Returning… Read More Two Thousand and Fifteen

Documenting a Year

I will never be able to sum up my entire year in a video in just over three minutes, but this is my attempt at doing so. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this video came together, and that I had actually filmed enough footage to last the duration of the background track; particularly,… Read More Documenting a Year

Two Thousand and Fourteen

There are many various adjectives which I could use to describe the past year, but I’m at a loss. There is simply no way that I could begin to accurately describe the year that has been, and all that has taken place and then changed in a thousand different ways. I am speechless. All I… Read More Two Thousand and Fourteen

Wattwandern

Along the entire west coast of Germany lies an area known as the Wattenmeer. This is a section of the North Sea where the North Frisian Islands are located and is subject everyday to extreme tides. Every six hours the sea water moves away from the coast leaving long stretches of mud flats behind. A… Read More Wattwandern

Hamburg Tag

Last weekend the German rebound exchange students (Rotex) organised a ‘Hamburg Tag’ for all the Inbounds as a way for the newbies to see the city. Hamburg is a stunning city and the second largest city in Germany, after Berlin, and is located just 2 hours south of Flensburg by train. We left Flensburg at 7am… Read More Hamburg Tag
