The day of departure is nigh, and I am about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Departing from Canberra on the 18th of January 2014, I will traverse 3 domestic and 3 international airports, to eventually reach my final destination: Flensburg, Germany.
I am beyond excited to begin my 12 month exchange, and in some ways the beginning of my exchange journey has now come to an end. I have spent months communicating with Rotarians, preparing for a vigorous interview process, writing my speeches to present at school and to my local Rotary club. I have attended two action packed briefing weekends, and continued my German study in the meantime. I will now enter the second phase in my Rotary Youth Exchange saga and I’m now prepared to take a big leap into the unknown, by living for a year abroad. My hard work and preparation have now finally come to fruition.
Thank you to Rotary International for the opportunity of a lifetime, I am overcome with gratitude. I understand it will not always be a walk in the park, as is life. However, I know I am ready to overcome any challenges which may come my way and make the most of every opportunity.
So, once I’m on that plane and I’ve said all my goodbyes, I’ll be looking forward to the beginning of the biggest year in my life to date.
From the lyrics of my ‘theme’ song (Called Out in the Dark by Snow Patrol) for the coming year: This is your life, This is your time…
I read this Madeleine. I have not met you but wish you all that is good in your year in Germany.
